Embroidery
As Saulo’s senior thesis collection was based on the idea of placing flowers on a large scale onto the human body, her initial digital collages featured many intricate patterns made from textures of dried flowers petals. In order to mimic these textures, Saulo digitally traced over the layers of texture and assigned each shape to a variety of thread work and beads. Using materials such as pearlescent sequins, seed pearls, and pearl beads with techniques such as chain stitching and fabric applique, the textiles within the collection has a modern take on the anatomy of the flower.
The Fallen Petal Dress
This embroidered house dress mimics an exact replica of an experimental collage featuring lace trim and dried pressed Hydrangea petals. Through the process of tracing each of these elements and dissecting the anatomy of a piece of lace with Adobe Illustrator, color coding & assigning each section to their corresponding embroidery technique, these elements are beautifully abstracted along the surface of the dress’ blush silk chiffon.
The Lacey Pant
Also created from paper doll collages of lace and preserved flowers, these pants abstract patterns seen in typical lace trim and up scales them onto the human body. Through the use of loose thread work in a palette of varying blush and pink tones on layers of transparent pink silk chiffon, this whimsical paper doll comes to life.
The Evangeline Robe
This modern twist on traditional lingerie is oversized to give the wearer a shrunken doll look, the Evangeline Robe features layered prints made by Saulo from silk chiffon and an oversized lace trim made from bead and thread work embroidery. By abstracting shapes from a blown-up image of lace trim, Saulo evolves everyday frilly lace into something new.
Print Making with Cyanotype & Digital Collages
Along with the influence of flowers, the collection showcases a multitude of patterns and prints on transparent and buildable textiles such as silk chiffon and silk organza. Within this process, the technique of cyanotype with dried & pressed flowers was frequently used and manipulated digitally to create beautiful patterns. Many of the patterns within the textiles of the collection are digitally printed while the others showcased on tights use the method of block printing with pressed flowers and fabric ink. Moreover, graphics featured in the collection consisted of these scanned cyanotypes mixed in with curated romantic imagery.
